Message From the President of the Board of Trustees

Donors and Contributors

It is my good fortune to preside over the Board during this exciting time of continuing growth in the student body, and the development and expansion of the Institute into new areas of activity.

I came to the CICSW Board from a business background including many years in the securities industry, a perspective different from most Board members. My prior experience as Executive Director of the California Psychiatric Association was more closely aligned to the Institute. Given this background, I am able to contribute ideas and expertise to complement the professional viewpoints held by Board members working in the field of mental health.

Current Developments

I joined the Board at a time when the Institute was revising its organizational structure and experimenting with new ways of addressing issues.

  • We continue to recruit professionals from aligned and complimentary disciplines, such as MFTs, as students and to serve on the Board and the faculty
  • We initiated a program with the Children’s Bureau of Southern California last year. Through this program, students of the Institute provide services to low-income children and their families while they earn part of their tuition. This year the program will reach out to the Hispanic community as part of our goal of bringing services to a wider community through partnering with other organizations.
  • The Psychotherapy Services clinic has been revitalized thanks to the hard work of Joan Dasteel and her committee. Because of their efforts the service is more involved in outreach, resulting in new supervisors, direct service providers, and clients.
  • We are pleased to have three new Board members: Ardelle Merritt, Tom Peters, and Victor Para. All have had and continue to have distinguished careers in the field. We are fortunate to have them on our board.
  • You are reading this message on the new online version of "Clinical Connections." This was launched successfully three years ago as a print publication and will now be circulated electronically. It continues to provide a forum for our Institute community, connecting students, alumni, and friends through articles, presentations, poems, and book reviews. The new form allows us to broadcast updates more frequently, and enables the Institute to reach out more easily to the larger community of people in affiliated professions.

I am certain the Institute will continue to grow and flourish given the support of the Board, alumni, and the dedicated faculty and students who all contribute to its quality and success.
