The Sanville Institute’s state-approved doctoral program in clinical social work is open to all students holding a master’s degree who are licensed or eligible for licensure, have sufficient clinical practice to sustain the program's practicum and who have state-mandated malpractice insurance. The two-year certificate program is open to all qualified mental health professionals who have a master’s degree and are licensed or license-eligible.

"Years after my doctoral education at Sanville Institute (The then California Institute for Clinical Social Work), I continue to look back at my education there as invaluable. Those who have gone directly to other doctoral programs, especially those in psychoanalysis, don't know what they have missed -- the exceptional depth and integration of clinical theory and practice are unique. “The doctoral program at the Institute was instrumental in helping me to transform from a ‘consumer’ of theory and models of practice into someone who could "give back," someone able to and brave enough to think more creatively and to publish and teach.”
