The Sanville Institute began in 1974 and offers both a state-approved PhD and a two-year certificate in psychodynamic psychotherapy. Both programs are designed for master's-level mental health professionals. The Institute promotes clinical scholarship and integrates theory and practice. Candidates can continue in their own practice as a practicum, individualize their program of study, and complete qualitative research of clinical issues and social problems. Programs are offered in northern and southern California, in the greater Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay Areas.

“The Institute remains a vibrant community dedicated to excellence in clinical education, practice, and research. The faculty has developed and integrated into the curriculum an exciting new approach to our "social" perspective. Our curriculum has always included the traditional social work view of understanding the client in his or her social and cultural surround. This new addition seeks to contextualize our theories themselves and to make conscious our socially determined epistemologies, thereby deepening our capacity to critique theory.”
Gareth S. Hill, MSW, PhD,
1978, former Dean of The Sanville Institute
“The Sanville Institute offers students an opportunity for clinical expansion through exciting and innovative learning opportunities.  The students have a learning ground that expend their theoretical knowledge and clinical practice.  The experience of learning together with peers and subjecting oneself to other clinicians' evaluation is an invaluable tool for clinical expansion.”
